Summary

Soon after returning to the Material Plane after what she initially perceived as being seven years and a day in service to an archfey in the Feywild, Tavares finds herself exiled from her home in Callidae, her True Name stolen from her by her now patron, and forever marked and changed by the pact binding her to the Pale Prince.

As she ventures out onto the surface and away from the city in the ice, she falls victim to a mind flayer's nautiloid, where she is infected with one of their parasitic tadpoles before an attack on the ship leads to her and others like her finding their freedom within the wilderness of the Storm Coast, desperate for a cure before they themselves are turned into mind flayers.

Background

• Tavares is the daughter of an Aevendrow noblewoman in Callidae, though she is unaware of the scandal surrounding her conception for many decades, until she is in her early forties.
• When Tav is forty-two, she is lured into the Feywild by a winter eladrin who turns out to be her father — who had effectively sold her as a firstborn child for a Faerie contract to the Prince of Frost.
• She must serve the Archfey in his Fortress of Frozen Tears for "seven years and a day" — which turns out to last over 50 years in the Prime Material Plane — before she is released under special conditions with a contract of her own.
• Tav is pressured into becoming a Scion of the Long Night — one of the Pale Prince's warlocks — or face being turned into a frozen statue in the Vale of the Long Night.
• She is tasked with bringing misfortune and collecting the resulting tears that will contribute to the Fortress of Frozen Tears.
